Incident 2025-002

AI-generated sexual images of a woman posted under a fake persona that drew over a million followers

What happened

An Instagram account under an invented name had 1.4 million followers by July 2025, with pictures and videos of what appeared to be a young Assamese woman. The face was that of a real woman in Dibrugarh, who is not on social media and learned about the account only when it went viral. Police said a man she knew had built the persona from private photographs of her, at first by altering real pictures and later by generating new photos and videos with AI tools.

Police believe he made about ₹10 lakh by selling access to explicit content through paid subscriptions.

What followed

Her family complained to the police in Dibrugarh on 11 July 2025 and the man was arrested the next day. Police said the motive was revenge, and seized his devices and bank records. The account is no longer public, but the BBC reported that its images were still circulating on social media.

NoteReports differ on which AI tools were used and on how the two knew each other, and the allegations have not been tested in court. We have left out the account’s name because it echoes the woman’s own.
