AI voice clones of two Bollywood actors used in fake election videos
What happened
During the 2024 general election, two videos went viral in which the actors Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh appeared to criticise the Prime Minister and ask people to vote for the Congress party. Reuters counted more than half a million views within a week and could not establish who had made them.
The fact-checking outlet BOOM found that each video used real footage with an AI-cloned voice laid over it. The Aamir Khan clip came from a 2014 promotion for his television show, and the Ranveer Singh clip from a recent visit to Varanasi.
